Back by popular demand! One of our Pilgrim students’ all-time favorite visitors, Professor Art Benjamin, returns to dazzle and amaze with his feats of magic and mental math.
Arthur Benjamin has always been a mathematician…..And he has always loved magic! So he started combining the two early in his life and became the Mathemagician. Dr. Benjamin received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences from Johns Hopkins University and immediately moved to California, began teaching at Harvey Mudd, and of course, as all math professors do, started performing at the Magic Castle. Dr. Benjamin is the Smallwood Family Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, and is the author of many scholarly as well as popular books of mathematical theory, including Secrets of Mental Math: The Mathemagician's Guide to Lightning Calculation and Amazing Math Tricks and The Magic of Math: Solving for x and Figuring Out Why. His TED talk on math education is one of the most-viewed TED talks, he is number 6 on the list of all-time greats in American competitive backgammon, and he says that ‘9’ is the most magical number. He received the 2017 Communications Award from the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics, which is awarded to people who, on a sustained basis, share the beauty and value of mathematics with a broad audience. Professor Benjamin will share his love of math and his love of magic with our lucky Secondary students, and this time we are including 5th grade as a special treat.
