David Mellon is that rare bird who has achieved success in both the visual and literary arts. He grew up in Denham Springs, a little town on a river in south east Louisiana, then headed west. After attending San Francisco Art Institute and California Institute for the Arts he graduated from Art Center College of Design with a degree in Illustration. He has built a career in illustration and storyboard drawings with clients such as BMW, Mattel, and Dr. Pepper, and his painting was featured in FCCLA’s 2016 art exhibit Alimento. A few years ago, he discovered the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program and began writing his first novel with illustrations, Silent, for which he was nominated for the 2016 Allegra Johnson Prize. He will spend time at Pilgrim talking and lunching with our Secondary Creative Writing and Art students, sharing his experience of accessing two different creative areas of his brain with our most creative minds.
