A Community for Everyone
At Pilgrim School, we use Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) strategies in our pursuit of this richer community. When looking at our classrooms, campus culture, and surrounding community, we’re constantly looking for ways to better make sure each student and staff member feels empowered and celebrated.
Building Inclusion and Belonging into Our Programs
- Elementary students take part in Amaze, a social-emotional learning program that explores social issues through the lens of the family.
- SPARK (Students Practicing Activism and Radical Kindness) is an age-appropriate DEIB group designed to introduce young children to the importance of creating safe spaces to express their identity and learn about each other.
- Secondary School Advisory meetings allow students have DEIB conversations in a safe and constructive space.
- Diverse perspectives are consciously incorporated into our curriculum at all levels.
Celebrating Our Community On- and Off-Campus
- Students can join or create identity-based affinity groups and cultural clubs that allow students of a shared identity or common interest to connect, learn from each other, and build solidarity.
- Heritage month celebrations.
- We host artists and community leaders from diverse backgrounds on campus and facilitate important conversations with students.
- Pilgrim School is proud to work with Alexandria House, a transitional home for women and children.
Pilgrim School’s Next Steps
Our high expectations for our students reflect our high standards for our administrators and staff in creating an inclusive community. A commitment to equality and inclusion means that we know our work is never done. There is always more to learn, more progress to make. We commit our resources, infrastructure, labor, and attention to these pursuits.
- We’re working with a consultant to develop long lasting practices that will result in a more open and supportive environment for staff and students.
- By retaining a recruiting agency, we’re actively creating a more diverse student body.
- We’re constantly listening to staff, students, parents, and community members on ways to deliver a more inclusive and equitable educational environment.
